Hatching t. taeniura...escapees...

Terry Cox Aug 26, 2003 09:30 PM

If you remember I mated two het for calico, supposedly. I was anxious to find out for sure.

Four days ago I noticed the lid on the box of incubating eggs was ajar. Looking inside I found two eggs had hatched and both were gone. I was disappointed. Incubation time was about 60 days.

Next day a third had hatched and to my surprise it was a calico. Yeaaaaa!!

Next I found one of the escapees trying to leave the herp room. It was a normal.

The next day the last two hatched and were both normal. So, I ended up with 1 calico and 3 normals. There's still the one on the loose that I don't know about, but at least I know about the parents and I have one calico I can raise up as a breeder.

I think I'll keep the adults one more year and try to get another calico or two next summer, then sell the adults. Here's a pic of what the eggs looked like...they were quite large and hard shelled, unlike most other ratsnake eggs...

Congtautalions on the breeding and finding a few of the missing fellas. Last year I housed a clutch of Pueblans with a loose lid and found a few in the snake room, one under the rug (weeks later) and another outside under my "Welcome" matt (5 months later).

I'd love to see pics of the Calico - They're such stunning animals.

How about a picture of that calico baby that you have. Later, Randy

It's probably got a real good hiding place by now. My cat's been looking too and come up empty handed, or a pawwed.

I'm still not set up for digital. I gotta get on that. I'll take some 35's after they shed and have 'em up in a couple days.

Meanwhile other exciting stuff is happening. My first ever Mandarin pipped yesterday. Still waiting on leopards. A pretty good year, so far

Well, I'm off to work again....TC.

Congrats Terry! Glad to see the hets proved out. I'm sure the missing one will turn up. Looks like you are having a pretty decent year. Keep up the good work.

Glenn, Tom, Randy...it's nice to know for sure about the hets. Now I can invest with confidence with them for next year. Although the other baby hasn't shown up, yet, it doesn't matter much. I'll change my incubating method with them, but the only one that matters is the calico. I probably won't keep the other three. My project is to cross a calico and an albino in the future. Next spring I might try to mate my albino fem. and het alb. male, if she's large enough.

Enough for now. Hope everyone is having good luck and hatching out some winners. Don't forget pics of the babies. Take care ya'all

Terry
