new to savs

tj_sa1816 Jan 30, 2008 05:22 PM

I recently got a young savannah monitor and I am really excited. It eats well, seems very active and is really pretty(eye of the beholder). I have heard and read that savs tend to be calm and don't mind interaction but mine starts to get real skittish after like 2-3 minutes. Every once in a while begins to hiss and open its mouth to bite me i geuss. Like I said it is young so I was just curious if this is normal and if so what is the best way to get them to come around.

I asked a similiar question a few months ago. Here is what ive been told and learned:

Leave them alone. they are little guys and scared your going to eat them or something. spend the next several months making sure it has all its needs taken care of. dont pick it up.... in time it will associate you with not being a threat. They are smart and learn your routines.

I started with a tiny snappin' poopin' tail whippin' scared baby Sav.... after following the advice of people on here.... I have a secure calm relaxed well fed 9 month old sav.

It is always good to handle them at young age but how you said after 2-3 minutes it starts getting nervouse well start out shorter periods and when they are comfortable with that time frame then increase the time... hope that helps
