Anyone Going To NARBC In Arlington?

stevenxowens792 Jan 31, 2008 01:38 PM

I'm sure Lance and I will be out there. Curious if anyone else is going to be there?

Best Wishes,

I should be there on Saturday for a good part of the day. You may be able to find me around Don Shores or Don Soderberg's table hanging out at various times.

I'm hoping to fly down from Utah with my wife if my book is ready to go. It's printing in China, and with their 10-day-long New Year they have coming up, it's still iffy. I'm sure hoping to be there.

Haha...who is that in the photo? Is that JediKnight right next to the cut? Big Hill?

Don't worry...I tried to do my best to include everything that anyone would ever want to know about Subocs in this book, but it's not heavy reading, in tone. I've always loved how the Barkers include lots of interesting historical tidbits into their books and articles. Just like their last article, they wrote about the arrival of the first captive Blood Python on U.S. soil. That type of stuff was always interesting to me and fun to read.

You'll see a lot of stuff like that in this book. There's a lot of natural and captive history as well as personal anecdotes from a lot of well-known southwestern herpers/breeders. There are nearly 80 cited published references throughout the text and probably more than twice that many in the suggested readings. I think that stuff is really important to add to a herpetocultural book, because we at least need to show other published opinions, when we present our own...I never liked how some herpetocultural works make certain statements and proposals (especially scientific ones) without any cited reference that backs or opposes their conclusions/viewpoints. I think a well-researched reference section adds an avenue for people that want to dig deeper into the science, if they choose, while others can say, "Oh okay, it looks like he got that information from a credible source, and not just John Doe's Snake Blog."

There's even a tribute chapter (or an appendix, really) to Carl Kauffeld, which was fun to write.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that i think you'll get a kick out of it while feeling enlightened at the same time. At least, that was my hope and aim while writing it. I really hope it will spur thought and further writings/research. It's difficult to think of another medium-to-large genus of colubrid in the pet trade that's restricted to U.S. desert habitat. Subocs are really special.

Hey dude, stop dissing me and my blog! You can keep all your fancy citations and references. I don't need them because I'm a REAL EXPERT, I've got blog and everything. I even posted something about Subox once, so I know what I'm talking about. Heck, a friend of my cousin actually caught one once and it lived for three whole months!

I think I laughed out loud for about 20 seconds straight. I knew someone couldn't resist.

The guy in the back of the truck is me. I proceeded to climb up onto the cab to retrieve the snake. My truck was only a week old but it did not matter because that was an alterna up above. She was on the big cut I think 8 miles north of Sanderson. That was the first and only time Ive hunted there.
