egg box problems

closedcasket88 Jan 31, 2008 04:15 PM

this is my first attempted leopard gecko breeding, ive always been a snake man but im just starting to get into lizards and such and there breeding habitits are unknown to me .
ive tried a couple different style laying box's with different substrate too, mostly a mossy mixture .and its getting about time she lays and she just doesnt like whatever i put in there . im positive shes gravid , i can see the eggs developing in her and its been awhile. she has also never bred before .
i seen a kool egg layinbg/hidebox suggestted for leopards and such that i wasthinking of getting, ceramic might be a little better and more secure feeling maybee
also do leopard geckos have a pre egglaying shed like snakes have?she just shed a few days ago if that helps

We use like dollar store food containers , and put like moss in it and mist it with water as a laying box ,
do you recall how long has she been gravid ?
are you feeding her everyday ? and coating the crickets / mealie worms with a pure calcuim ? at all
also how much does she weight in grams ? any idea .
if she would of breeded before she was over weight she could possibly not have enough calcuim for the eggs to develop solid white coat so she could push them out .
im giving all opinions .
i HAD a leo that laid about 6 clutches and her 7th she became egg bound .
i would take her to the reptile vet around you if you can and have her get a check up . just to make sure shes not egg bound.
good luck

well actualy, i dont think shes overdue, but its almost time ,as you breeders know about being impatient i think thats all my problem is ,but i realy am afraid she wont use her box, shes been an adult for a while ,i got her off a freinds that never bred her . i just dont know if instinct will kick in in time b4 she does get egg bound
i tried clearboxes dark boxes, smal, big ,different mixtures of moss and such

My suggestion would be to pick an egg box and use it. Stop changing them up. I use a cool whip container with a hole cut in the top and damp sphagnum moss inside. Make sure the laying substrate is not too wet. I wet my moss under the faucet and then wring it out so that it is damp but not dripping water. With moss you have to do this probably daily. She will eventually find the box when she is ready to lay as they search for the most suitable laying area in the enclosure. My gecko did have pre-laying sheds for each clutch that she laid although I'm not sure that all geckos do. My gecko laid within a week after she shed. When she starts digging, then you know she is close. And if she does lay outside of her lay box, the eggs can be saved if they are recovered in time and placed in an incubator. Have the incubator temped and ready for eggs well before she lays. And I do agree that patience is your only problem.. good luck.

Iwent to walmart and cleared the shelves(lierally) of the cheap rectangular food container(2 for $.98) , cut a hole in one corner of the lid and filled them all with dampened spagnum peat moss.

works like a charm.
