1971 Indigo

DMong Jan 31, 2008 06:58 PM

Here is a an old archival photo of me holding my wild-caught Indigo that my mom gave to me for Christmas(or Birthday), I can't remember which, as she bought me numerous snakes when I was a young kid. This one came from the Florida Everglades region. My mom had a friend that lived in Homestead who's husband did a lot of snake hunting there. I had killer "Miami" phase corns, brooksi, Yellow Rats, Greensnakes,Indigos, etc...
I remember taking snakes of different types to my third grade "SHOW & TELL"!, that was a blast.

I will NEVER forget when two older boys came to my house back around 1972-73, and wanted to sell me a GIGANTIC MONSTER of an Indigo they had. This thing was every bit of 8.5 to 9 ft. in length, and was the absolute largest specimen I've EVER seen to date. Well, these kids wanted to sell this regal beast to me for eight bucks. Being as I was only about twelve or so, I had to beg my mom to buy it for me,......She claimed that I wasn't doing as well as I should be doing in my school work, so she would NOT buy it for me, no matter what. So I told the kids the bad news, and I had to watch those two boys carry that regal, noble beast off into the sunset!...GRRR!

Can you imagine!,....less than a dollar per foot for such an AWESOME animal!????........WOW!................those were truly different times my friends.

enjoy!,

Hey Doug, I like the old vintage pic! I probably went to school with you guys at Northside Elementary or Everglades Middle back then. Anyone who is a long time resident, or familiar with those old days can recall indigos found pretty much anywhere right in town, along drainage ditches (now draining parking lots and condos) and in parks, golf courses. How this area has changed in one generation is unbelievable. I’m glad we got to experience the things we did.

Yeah, I'm glad we grew up in those times too, I just CAN'T picture myself wearing my pants down past my ass, and diggin' on hip-hop/rap either..LOL!

Oh, I was the younger kid on the right in that photo(older brother on left), and was not quite eleven years old there, so I was going to Lauderdale Manors Elementary at the time that pic was taken.

Glad you liked the old pic!, take care,

~Doug
