possible impaction

mkco79 Jan 31, 2008 10:51 PM

hey all been a long time since i've been on here both my leos were doing great. One however hasstopped eating its been almost three weeks since he ate more than one or two worms he's lost a lot of weight then tonight i noticed he's dragging his back legs. he's occasionally using them walking normal then draggs them like he cant use the lower half of his body. He's my baby and my first gecko so I'm freaking out going to call the vet in the morning hoping someone might have suggestions as to what to do in the meantime. any help would be appreciated. At first i suspected impaction but cant figure out what he may have eaten he lives on tile not sand the mealworms are the only thing I can think of but isint that pretty rare? thanks you all

W

Trip to the vet is definitely the right thing and the sooner the better. In the meantime, if you've got a store nearby the emergency food staple is a product called Ensure vanilla flavor ONLY. It is a milk based vitamin drink usually targeted at older adult humans, but is high in calcium and protein. It can be gently dripped on the nose of the gecko and usually all but the sickest gecko will lick it off and you can get some hydration and nutrition in the little one. At the very least, you will feel better being able to do something. I know how that feels.

You can find the vanilla ensure shelf stable cans in either the vitamin or diet drink isles of almost every drug, discount, or grocery store.

Ask our recent gecko on the board to get the Ensure treatment, Nacho s/he's doing great according to her owner's post. Please let us know what the vet says. Good luck and take care.

just spoke with the vet she said since he still uses his legs and it seems to be voulentary when he drags them that is may be painful to walk due to impaction. soak him for 20 min in hot water a few times today and tomorrow then if he doesnt pass it bring him in she said since he is still drinking and even showing the slightest interest in eating we may have cought it early enough that he can pass it on his own. will still be getting him some ensure just to make sure hes getting nutrients not really worried about dehydration since he's still drinking like a fish. Thanks for the help!
