New Border [Area?] ID Requirements

Chris_McMartin Feb 01, 2008 08:49 AM

The new identification requirements for the border just went into effect; you need to have birth certificate/passport, as well as a govt-issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license) to cross the border.

Does anyone know if these documents will also be checked at the Border Patrol checkpoints (e.g. Hwy 90) as well? If so, I'll have to update my herp-trip packing list.

I can not imagine the requirement for a passport to drive along a highway in TX, NM, AZ, or CA when you never cross a border... But if you will be down that way and may want to pop accross for lunch with whatever group you are with...

At any rate as far as I know it will only impact you as you try to cross the border, and with murphy's law it will not impact you on the way into Mexico, only on the way back Remember the toast always lands butter side down....

Inside the US, you have no worries. Nothing has changed.

Good. I'm relieved that I wont need a passport just to get groceries or see a doctor! Heck, after hundreds of checkpoint crossings, I've only been asked to show my license once (when a drug dog alerted on my wife's prescription meds). OTOH my wife was unable to find her license once when we were returning from Ojinaga. That resulted in a few tense moments, but even then we were not banned from the US. I'm sure most of the BP agents will continue to rely of good judgment more than any specific law handed down from DC.

Oops, using the word "crossing" was a little confusing. I was referring to the interior border checkpoints NOT actual border crossings. They almost always ask to see my license at border crossings.
