Going to Florida- where to start

Herbiesmomma Feb 02, 2008 04:15 AM

Hi, I am going down to Florida May 25th- June 20th. I will be camping in the Everglades for a few nights, spending some time in St. Pete beach, Tampa, and Orlando. Will also take a couple day trips to Merritt Island. I am not asking anyone to hold my hand and lift wood piles for me. What I would like to know is where to start, maybe some good books to research? I have only gone field herping a few times, so I don't really know much. I am interested in: Alligators and crocs- I know where to find them, lizards, and snakes. Would enjoy seeing anything really. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Cheri

I did get out during the Daytona run last August for only one day and found an eastern diamondbacked rattlesnake that made the trip for me. I walked Tiger Bay Forest, mid morning, she was laid up under a pine trees' root system, but I did see her as she was just watching me! A night drive only netted some Florida water snakes, but I was solo the first night so I was stoked.

If you are camping in the Everglades in mid summer, start with mosquito repellent.

Try night cruising the Park roads, but remember you can look but not touch there....

You might see on of these there:
