"Pure" German Gaint

tdh2r Feb 02, 2008 05:31 AM

Hello, I have reciently endevored to start a breeding project. In looking for suitible breeders I have seen alot of Sandfire/Orange Giant, or whatever, but I can not seem to find one that is just German Giant. Is their such a thing or is it just dragons that have traits such as narrow head, large size, bigger clutches...?

It is my understanding that the German Giant strain was just a larger hardy strain of genetics that came from Germany a while back. Pete Wise was the guy who bought the originals, and then they were also distributed to other breeders.

Now, they have been thoroughly dispersed through the market and other genetics. However, I know that many people will call their dragons German Giants if they are just large and hardy, but there are not many physical differences to make you sure of it.

I know that Dragons Den has dragons they market as German Giant, and I have had a couple of those dragons, and they are great, though, it is hard to say that any german giant lines are "pure".

But, many breeders keep track of their genetics, and can give you a very accurate idea of what your getting. Rob and Vickie Dachiu, AlphaDragons, and Josh at Phantom Dragons do a great job at this, and I am sure there are others that are others that do just as well.

Hope this info helped.

Phil

German giant bearded dragons are the same as regular bearded dragons. The only real difference is they have been selectively bred to maximize size and robustness instead of color and pattern. As the breeders working on this were from Germany, that is why they gained the name 'German Giants'.

In the US and other areas they have been interbred to add color to the same line.. I expect the only way to get pure German Giants will be to import them from German based breeders, or breeders elsewhere who are still breeding them 'pure' instead of adding them to more colorful morphs to give them more size etc.

At least this is how I have always understood the German giant line to be.

He is a beautiful dragon! How did you get him imported and was it ridiculously expensive?

jeffk Feb 03, 2008 11:59 PM

I bought him at a show a few years back and he was being sold as a german giant for $200. hes at about 24 3/4 inches long. i will get a pic up as soon as possible.

Geman Giants were regular BD bought to Germany from Australia they were hand picked for their size and robustness and bred as so for generations creating larger more robust dragons. Its like breeding bigger rottweiler with bigger rottweilers you get bigger rottweillers. German Giants are not always super long but more robust and heavier.

He was imported by Bill Brandt at Rodent Gourmet. Elizabeth Craig of Satyrday dragons used to or still does work for him. I bought Satyrday Dragons last clutch and Oglethorpe. In my experience German Giants are not necessarily longer but they are usually heavier built then most dragons. Most of the German Giants here in the states are maybe 1/8th or 1/16th German Giant Many of the dragons originally imported into Europe were not just vitticeps but mitchelli, barbata and others. I believe that the German Giants crosses that I have, have a decent amount barbata ancestry.

Thanks,

Randy
