Anybody that keeps any herps at all needs to start composing well thought out letters to oppose this idea. It is important to persuade them, not just rant and rave... No matter how stupid this plan is.
For one the perceived danger is far less than the real one posed by "man's best friend". If such a ban is founded in public safety and any data was looked at for the pet trade as a whole then herps would be close to the bottom of the list, topped by far by livestock and dogs.
As for conservation, this will in effect close down the exchange of captive produced animals which are the very reason that wholesale importers are having a lower impact now then several years ago. They should instead promote any captive breeding projects in the private sector... after all hobbyist have done far more than academics to further our understanding of captive reproduction of herps.
