Species you keep. .

bloodycats Aug 27, 2003 12:19 AM

Hi all, I was just wondering how many people here keep different species and what the progressionwas for you in keeping them- what did you begun with and what species is your goal? What's your favorite so far?

For me, I began with good ol corn snakes, went to ball pythons and now have a jungle carpet baby. I would like to keep a green tree python and an island locality boa constrictor. My favorite are the balls so far because of their laid back attitudes and cute little faces. I have a normal and a hypo ball and both are sweet snakes and consistent feeders.

Now you. . .

I started with a BP, and then got a corn, then branched off and got a Bearded Dragon. I'd love to get a Blood Python, Childrens, and Sawu. I prefer the snakes that stay under 6ft and are handleable...for now, anyway.

I started with my Corn, then the Water, after that my 4 Eastern Garter babies, then the House Snake Pair, then my Red Sideds, and Florida blues, and finaly my Argentines and Green snakes. Well my goal would be convincing my parents to allow me to keep more, they dont mind having the animals but our zoo runs the electric bill sky high. We also have a decent fish collection the we recently down sized from 15 tanks to 8 so that we could cut costs. I dont realy have one favorite but the House snakes and the Boas are up there.

"but our zoo runs the electric bill sky high."

What are you using to heat your animals. I have acomparable sized collection to yours if not a little bigger. I heat all my reptiles with about 20 watts. And that's even lower at night. Fles-watt with a dimmer switch and/or thermostat is the way to go.

Hi, actually she is a Columbian Red-tail boa (BCI). Her name is Minikin and she's about 8 1/2' last time I measured, although I had her out the other day and my wife and I both agreed she looks longer than the last time we measured her so it may be time to a re-measure. She's a pretty thich girl also. Take care, Scott.

... Just kidding.

0.1 albino black rat snake
1.0 Bearded Dragon (not a snake I know)

I've also kept a Russian tortoise and leopard gecko... as well as taking care of several snakes and other herps while I worked at a pet store.

In the future I want a pair of northern pines for breeding, a Cal king or chain king, and an ackie monitor. Those are the animals highest on my list, but they are all probably 2-3 years away at least. The only thing keeping me from filling my little home with snakes is... space, time, and money... that and my mobile lifestyle... damn! Well in the meantime I try to get out and find some cal kings, rattlers, and pacific gophers in the wild, its more fun anyway.

Well, my first snake ever was a little ringneck snake I caught when I was really little (I'm only 19, but I still can't remember how young I was :-P ). Probably why they're one of my favorite snakes. Last fall/winter I had over 100 herps, including over 20 snakes...but I had to move, so I had to sell or trade most of them...my current collection is in my signature. I started my real collection when I moved up here from AL, but before I had the 100 herps, and my first snake in that period was my albino corn...too much sentimental value with her...hence why I traded away some much nicer snakes to keep her . I have a lot of goal snakes though. I'd love a pair of melanistic Elaphe janseni. A pair of Eastern Indigos would be nice as well. I have a strong affinity for the Tricolor Hognose. Scarlet Kings are another. I'm not huge into boas and pythons though, except my dumeril's. Eventually I plan to get some venomous (between 7-10 years from now if I'm nice and settled by then)...as for those goals, the king cobras are my favorite (Indonesian), I love gaboon vipers, and the Eastern Diamondback would come in a close third. Coral snakes are nice to, but their small size makes me a bit nervous. I'm always better at handling larger snakes.

I started out collecting snakes as a kid in MO. Used to keep them for a few days and then let them go. Didnt know how to take care of them, and in those days we didnt have the internet to find out all the great information that is available now!! The first snake I actually kept for a few years until it escaped was a huge black rat I caught in my grandmas chicken coop!
I would have to say my favorite snakes are the North American rat snakes and the North American Kingsnakes.

I currently have:

Male KY locale normal corn ('00)

Male Albino black rat snake (Dwight Good stock) ('02)

Male KY locale black rat snake ('01)

Male coastal phase california kingsnake

I also have a female '02 coastal phase california king. I need to get some pics of her posted.
I plan on adding the following snakes to my collection in the future:

Prairie Kingsnake
Black Kingsnake
Everglades Ratsnake
Yellow Ratsnake
Gray Ratsnake

Happy herping
Brian
