First off, I don't keep herps anymore and have only kept one boid (Burmese python) in my life. So, this proposed ban won't directly impact me in the lease. Perhaps I shouldn't care. The problem is that it didn't start here and it wont stop here.
The anti-pet lobby is attacking us piece by piece and counting on our internal differences to prevent us from uniting. So far, they've been largely correct. I just read the following comment on another reptile forum:
How many boa/burm/ball python people supported the keepers of native species when their rights were threatened and/or removed? It's a given if you keep both, but I've heard "I don't care about corns and kings, only snakes that I can breed and make good money off of" at reptile shows.
Perhaps these narcissists that feel entitled and privileged can fight this issue alone, and drown in the mess that they have created. It would be poetic justice to see the ball pythons worth thousands of dollars unable to move from one state to another.
It may be some people's battle, but I'm not sure if it's mine anymore.
The sad thing is, this is a common reaction. We need to change this narrow mindset and unite to defend our mutual interest.
