I knew this was coming. The damage that large snakes(Burms,Retics,Rocks, etc.) could possibly do to an eco-system in places like florida is deffinitely a problem. I understand the feds position on this but they must realize it is a relativley small percentage of persons who release large reptiles into the wild. The irresponsible people who have done such things are the sole reason that this issue has come up. These careless and foolish INDIVIDUALS have given yet another black eye to a life long passion of mine, the keeping/breeding of large snakes. It is what it is though, and it it is up to us responsible keepers to defend our right to keep these amazing aniamls, our right to sell/purchase animals from other states, and our right to import snakes. Alone one person cannot do much to thwart the governments increasing advances on our rights, but together we can and we will stop them. I don't really have much of a solution to this travesty, but I do have ideas. 1 Chipping all large snakes(what their average adult size is) at time of purchase or a size that would allow for a safe procedure. That way any snake caught in the wild could be scanned and the owner on the chip would be prosecuted. 2 Sellers, whether it is a pet shop or private transaction, would be required to document the purchasers personal information. Through a goverment function the sellers would give the info to the feds and the feds would require a "check-up" on the animals status once a year. Maybe a photo and detailed information on its health, cage, diet, etc. you send via e-mail.3 Some kind of system where you need a permit to have these animals. The permit could be easily obtained by attending a education class with a test at the end to determine if you were able to care for these animals properly. Much like a hunting lisence for minors. I understand that we should have to do none of the above, but we must find a way to keep these aniamls. Sorry for the long post.
