monitor meatballs

samuelhurd Feb 03, 2008 09:17 PM

does anyone know that "monitor meatball" recipe? i haven't kept monitors in years, and a friend just got one. i was trying to find the book that has it listed, but can't seem too. i recall its turkey hamburger, bone meal, and a crushed multi vitamin, but that was all i could remember. thanks

If you feed it whole preys like whole mice and rat, you don't need it. Whole preys are nutritionally balanced. Whereas just ground up muscle meat from turkey, beef, chicken, and pork is not. I don't see why go through all the trouble when you feed your monitors whole preys.

Those would be "ground turkey" meatballs. For "monitor" meatballs I would suggest using some of our Florida nile monitors since if you believe all the rhetoric we have lots of them. The meat in the tails is the best. Even though I am half Italian, I do not care for Italian food so I don't remember the exact recipe but I think it would go something like this. You would mix your ground monitor meat with seasoned bread crumbs and a bit of parmesan cheese I cannot remember if eggs are mixed in or not but I seem to think they are. For eggs i would suggest Fl. nile eggs or perhaps fl. iguana eggs. I think you add some seasoning to like oregano and such as well after mixing the ingredients you ball them up and fry them and then add them to your sauce and remember a bit of olive oil in the water will keep the pasta from sticking to the pan and gives it a bit more flavor. I hope that helps and enjoy your monitor meatballs.

I dont know whats with the responses youre getting but I too give occational turkey balls. Just to vary the diet a little but and well it is cheaper but deffinitely not a replacement of whole mice. I never came across and "recipes", I just use ground turkey with some added multi-vitamin suppliments. Hope this helps.

you can find the recipe at our FAQ, linked below. there is also more info there on the "how and why" to use it.

we don't use it often anymore, but it is easy to freeze a batch in an ice cube tray, and thaw out blocks when needed.

Thanks rybon,

that seems to be the original formula i was using. wow, this site has become populated by jerks. its no wonder all the old head keepers have migrated somewhere else. Everything i have posted in the last week has drown in some "no nothing" with an opinion and no help what so ever.

I always have them in my freezer. Mine love them mixed with a scrambled egg. I only feed this once a week, usually on Sunday mornings, their own turkey omelet. I use Robyn's recipe, and make a pound at a time as I only have a few ackies. My ackies are going on 6 years old now and still love this. They get really exited when they see me with the dish although their favorite is still crickets.
