Feeding trouble Identify?

spiderchick Feb 04, 2008 12:26 PM

Hi guys,
I got a new snake not too long ago and I believe he's a bull hybrid. (If anyone can offer help identifying him I'd be glad to email some photos, I can't seem to successfully attach them to any posts.) I've been having trouble getting him to eat well. Do bull's not feed very well on pre-killed? I've gotten him to eat a few times, always using different tricks, but I'm starting to worry about him. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Looks to be a pure Elaphe to me. Most hybrids have the "Pit" head to them.

If you look at Todd's post (first reply) the photos are in there. I've heard he's a bull, I've heard florida corn, black rat, I've even heard 'bear' snake. I'm pretty sure now that he's a great plains rat. During the day, I keep one end of his tank in the low 70's and the other end at about 85-90. During the night it get's to the mid 60's on the cool end and mid 70's on the warm end. I finally got him to eat yesterday. After trying all sorts of things, warming the mice, wiggling them, coverin his feeding tub, I finally just put him and the pinky back in his cage and within an hour it was gone. I've had him for about 4 months and he's eaten about 5 pinkies in that time. Is that normal? All my other snakes eat so well, but not this guy. Thanks for your help.

Is it wild caught or captive born? Sometimes a lizard is their first few meals, or maybe a nestling bird. If w/c, it could just be used to other prey items. Go small and try often, they eat at night a lot too.
