Behavior Changes in Female Iguana

Shaegator Feb 04, 2008 08:50 PM

Hi everyone. Could somebody please give me an idea of what on Earth is up with my iguana? She's female (I believe) and is almost four years old and around 3 1/2 ft long, tail included. She's never laid eggs before.

Yet, for the past two months I've noticed that she's gained a bit of orange pigmentation, but only enough to notice up close. She's lost her appetite and makes a ruckus until I let her out of her enclosure. And then she proceeds to wander around the house as if she's looking for something. She's even escaped a few times! That is something that she has never done before!

So, I figured that she was maybe looking for a place to lay eggs. I read about the egg-laying boxes, and how they are made with a large PVC tube leading to a dark box of damp sand. I made one using a huge rubbermaid storage box instead of wood and I introduced her to it. Yet, she pays no attention to it and proceeds to drive me crazy going up and down her enclosure.

I'm completely at a loss at what to do ...anybody have a clue about anything I might be doing wrong? Or is this just normal adult iggy behavior? Should I be worried that she's yet to lay eggs? Thanks everyone.

sounds like everything is good as long as the sand is deep enough! Glad to hear the cage is the a good size! Just a suggestion, my favorite book out of all the ones I've gone through is iguanas for dummies. You can pick it fairly cheap on ebay, half.com or amazon. ALOT of the book relates to small younger iguanas but does enough justice for the older ones. I enjoyed it, just wish they had more on poty training. The bath tub 45 minutes after they wake up every morning is getting annoying! if its not perfect timing they go everywhere or dont go till the water is cold. But its better than on the floor. I love that my male can free roam now in my room safely!

hi shaegator sounds like breeding season.and my ig goes from mid sept to mid dec for her breeding season she a little off as the vet says but makes it though it like a trooper me on the other hand drive you nuts... box maybe not right needs to be moist, warm, humid and dark good luck if ya get that. lol but try as best you can. and when they are ready to use it she will. not when you want her to. so if you realy want to be sure of eggs take her to vet get xray. vets say they can feel them but took her to vet and she couldnt feel nothing and just took my word for that there was eggs. so get xray for sure and sit back a wait for her thats all you can do oh and has she shed they stop when in breeding to and eating will go down to not eating at all but vet can give you some critcal care if she has had problems like mbd in the pastand some liquid calcium to keep her from getting sick hope this helps iggirl1
