Calcium Oxalate......?????

RoadSpawn Feb 04, 2008 11:04 PM

Hello Everyone
I thought I ask about calcium oxalate in the greens. I've come up with conflicting Ca:Phos ratios and am just wondering what to go by. According to Melissa Kaplan oxalates in some greens bring down the overall calcium to phosphorous ratio. Due to this am at a loss. What is the opinion on this subject when creating a diet for the iguanas? Thanks

example:
Melissa's Webpage (100 g)

Name Oxalate Cal Ox:Ca Phos Ca
Collard 450 218 2:1 29 7.5:1

Green Iguana Society Webpage

Collard 14.5:1

Iguana Den

Collard 52 3.6 14.6:1

So what's the deal? Thanks

I follow Melissa Kaplan diet which is basically 45% veggies like parsnips, winter squash, green beans, sugar snap peas, snow peas, and rabbit pellets (alfalfa), and 40-45% greens like collard, mustard, dandelion, and escarole. Everyother week I tend to add food that are rather high in calcium oxalate and goitrogen for variety like kale, brussel sprouts, bok choy, chards, etc...but I make sure that those food make no more than 1/3 of the total diet.
