New Retic Rescue- eat, puke, eat...

OKReptileRescue Feb 05, 2008 09:36 AM

We got a little retic in a few days ago. She's not skinny or otherwise unhealthy.
The prev. owners said that she regurges every meal and always has.... which had me confused as snot as to why she wasn't skinny.... The place was kinda creepy, i had kids in the car, we didn't wait around to ask a bunch of questions.

Last nite, i offered her a med rat- a little small for her but it did leave a slight buldge.
This morning I got up, and low and behold- theres the rat!

I got dressed and went to get my hook and some gloves and a new clean cage for her....
I came back and she has the rat wrapped up and is starting to eat it again.....

It smelled sooooo bad-- she regurged right ontop of where the heat pad is so it cooked for some time, mixed with the usual regurge smell-- it was hairless and just.... gross.

now... I didn't let her eat it- she only had taken basically one bite- she had the nose in her mouth- nothing more. so i picked her up and she dropped the rat... bit me about 15 times before i could get her into the other cage.

my problem is- what on earth would posess her to do that? Im assuming that she has eaten, regurged and eaten every meal... which is why shes... well- fat. She is incredibly healthy and about the same size as my personal retic. nice rounded back- no backbone showing....

so....
This is just odd- I know the "once you start down the regurge path, theres no coming back".... unless its a retic?

wtf do I do with her? Do I let her eat the rat the 2nd time? That can't be healthy... sanitary...? (cause rats are clean...)

anyway- any light on the situation would be helpful... Theres always a first for everything i guess...

ok, first off can and will eat anything, so dont be to surprised about that, the reason for the regurge could be anything from nerves to a defense action, but the thing is you dont want to just keep trying to feed it hoping it will hold it down, give it some time for its stomach acids to get settled down, ive had the best luck not feeding for about 3 weeks,i know for a retic that sounds like starving it,but it just helps them out.
good luck with it, and hey isnt that soooo much fun getting bit.
