Wayne,
I am the post below, I found the spotted turtle in Onslow on the 4th. It was just one of those days I guess. I saw a mole king on the side of the road in Pender on my way home today but it was gone by the time I turned around and there was a Mac behind me or I would have locked up the breaks!

I did make it out to NC once, to pick up Blueking, Carston Zoldy, for a trip out west. He took me to a few spots around his house, but there were no herps about that day. On the return trip, I saw a corn snke make it off the road, it would have been a lifer, but unless it is venomous, I only count in hand, or on film. Then I flipped my second salamander ever, and wouldn't you know, it was a slimy, I think. I did make it to the coast to see the Atlantic, something one MUST do when born and raised on the third coast!
Wayne, did I mention that your pics are smokin' and mine aren't!

Hi Wayne,

I had property in Onslow county for 10 years near Sneads Ferry. That whole area is great for herping. Use to see many canebrakes, coppperheads and kingsnakes on Topsoil Island. I know it has developed alot...but if you check the areas between the developement, especially on the sound side, you will still find alot of stuff. spotted turtles are also quite common in that area. Also, on some o of he dirts roads where you have bridges...park you car about 50 yards before you get to the bridge and walk up to them...you will be amazed of what you might find. Good luck...and if I ever get down that way again I'll wirte you first.

Dan, if you come down, I'll show where my Pender co oyster beds are! They are walking distance from the south end of the island!

Hi Blue,

I remember a friend taking me out to "oyster" one morning. While standing waiste deep in water with rake in my hand he causually asked "Dan are you afraid of sharks?" Two seconds later wide eyeied, I was standing on the shore...while Doug was still standing in the water laughing histerically!!

But just north of the south end of the island heading toward Holly Ridge has produced some really nice eastern kings. Use to be a large sign that was laying in the ditch on the east side of the road next to a delapidated house and it was always good for one or two eastern kings.

Dan, I know the raod AND the sign your talking about. The sign is gone now but that area still produces great kings! I saw a southern hog nose on that road once too, plus a thousand red-bellied watersnakes, give or take a few. I think I might drop down that road today on the way home from work, conditions are getting good. Oh, and don't worry about the sharks, they don't like clams!
