4yr old western hasn't eaten 3.5months

transpecos Feb 06, 2008 05:58 AM

I know this has probably been beaten to death, so please don't yell at me!
Since my Western Plains subspecies Hognose is over 4 years old I thought I would ask about why he isn't eating.

He usually does this not eating thing in the winter. It's been 3.5 months since he has eaten. I've tried and tried to get him to eat.
His refusal usually doesn't bother me but he's getting a little skinny.
Should I get the syringe/pinkie thing and force feed him?

He's not as zippy as he should be. He barely makes an effort to act cool with hissing, hitting and head spreading. He's been my friend for so long I don't know what to do with him.

I've tried downsizing his meals, I've left the mice in the cage overnight. I've kept him heated. It's too late for sticking him in a closet, he's skinny and not himself.
I've never had to stick him in a closet, etc..before.

Any suggestions?

And I've tried to feed him every week. I think I may be over-reacting. I'm going to try to feed him later on this afternoon and I'll let you know.

Get a fecal done. He may have parasites.

I will, that's the next step. Tonight we gave him a pinky milkshake. Medicine syringe (like for cough syrup, in package never used) and a chopped up in the magic bullit pinkie. He didn't get the whole thing, but he got some. I didn't want to stress him too much. He did start to zip up a little bit though. I also have a pinky in his cage now and he is looking at it pretty close. This might be it folks. He may eat on his own....................... stay tuned. This could be great. False alarm. He looked interested but now just slithered to the other side of the cage.

Try a live pinkie

Guess what.....................
I changed him to a smaller cage today.
He took the thawed and warmed pinkie out of my fingers.
That's my boy!!!!!!
