"...distracting the media's attention for two hours"

THE NATION (Bangkok, Thailand) 06 February 08 Freak rain and mating lizards
Strange things happened in Bangkok yesterday. Apirak Kosayodhin, the city's governor, made big preparations for the heavy off-season rains that hit the capital this week.
Usually, Bangkok does not experience heavy rain in the dry season from January to February. Rainwater levels over the past 30 years averaged only 9.1 millimetres. But this year, the level reached a high of 69 millimetres, causing unexpected floods in many areas.
On January 30, the rainwater covered 40 per cent of Bangkok. And it is expected that from today until Saturday, the amount of rain will increase by 10 to 30 per cent.
Yesterday, another unexpected yet amusing event happened at Government House.
Two big monitor lizards were seen mating in a pond, distracting the media's attention for two hours. The lizards were cavorting behind the Thai Kufah Building, where the offices of the prime minister and Cabinet members are located.
Bangkok has thousands of reptiles living in ponds and sewage areas. Even though monitor lizards are believed to be inauspicious, they are a kind of protected species. So, you cannot kill them.
And since the reptile is an ancient animal, it loves to stay around old areas, especially inner Bangkok or Government House.
In fact, monitor lizards have resurfaced many times at Government House. But the fact that they were mating in front of the national press was an unusual event.
Some even voiced suspicions that the lizards were set up. Did someone create a sexual vibe for them by, perhaps, drugging them with Ecstasy?
A few curious minds thought that the lizards' sexual high jinks were meant to challenge new Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej who recently asked a reporter if he had fornicated the night before. So some reporters came back with a vengeance by showing Samak that fornication is a natural act through the passionate mating scene live before his office.
But as we mentioned that anything is possible - like the off-season rains in Bangkok - we would like to stop these suspicious minds from reading too much into the love-struck lizards.
We don't believe they will bring bad luck to the government because one of our animal gurus says reptiles love to live around areas of fertile soil.
The pair of lovers just wanted to say hello to the new master of the house and show him that lizards, like the press, just want to have fun sometimes.

And yes, film at 11 ...
