Reptile Brightlight day bulb

ekpunobi Aug 27, 2003 06:23 AM

Hello,

I am new to reptiles, and I am adopting a 12" juvenile bearded dragon with metabolic bone disease. I will be getting him in 2 weeks, so I am hunting for supplies. I came across the Reptile Brightlight Day Bulb. Does anyone use this bulb? Would it be adequate for a BD? It is a full spectrum incandescent bulb with heat. I know someone who uses this with her two uromastyx, but I am unsure about this little guy.

Thanks!
Laura

If this dragon has signs of mbd I would definitely go with a strong Mercury Vapor bulb like Powersun. www.reptiledirect.com has good prices for these. With mbd he needs a good uvb producing light like the powersun and good calcium supplements used daily on his crickets to help stop the mbd. Sometime outside in the natural sun would be great for this poor fellow. MBD is caused by lack of calcium for a while. UVB helps create d3 in the dragon and helps him absorb the calcium you will be giving on his crickets daily. Not sure if that bulb you said gives off uvb most regular incandescent don't. They say full spectrum but just give off uva. For mbd he needs a strong UVB light like powersun and a supplement like rep-cal with d3. Good Luck

To be completely accurate, it is impossible for an incandescent bulb to produce UVB, because of their filament. Mercury vapor bulbs and flourescent tubes can produce UVB.
