Sheding question

JasonW Feb 06, 2008 02:45 PM

Both of my pythons are currently shedding. The female is almost done but still has some unshed skin on her nose, The male still has a lot of skin on him. The skin is flaking off rather than coming off in one clean peace like normal. Dose this indicate a hydration problem? Any thoughts?

Humidity. Not humid enough when it mattered, so the snake is shedding in pieces.

Soak him in lukewarm water for about fifteen minutes, then place him back in the cage. Most of the shed should come off.

Try checking into ways to bump up the humidity. Some methods that I've tried and had work for me with aquariums include coving the screen lid, putting a damp towel between the cover and the screen, using cypress mulch or cocosoft bedding, placing moss in hides and throughout the cage and misting that often enough to keep it moist, and misting the entire cage every day or every other day.

Good luck!

Ok I think my best bet is misting the entire enclosure. They are housed in "for the most part" home made wooden enclosures with screen doors on the fronts so covering them may be hard. Maybe I will look into removing the screen in favor for some Plexiglas. Thanks a million.

yes it means you dont have enough humidity in your tank...when mine shed i mist daily sometimes 2 daily, mist from the time there eyes glaze over to the time the completely shed, if you have enough humidity the shed should come off in one piece
