Cricket Question

cmsuphoto Feb 06, 2008 04:41 PM

I have three geckos in a decent size home made cage. The walls are made of wood, so the little crickets can climb out of reach of the geckos. In order to make sure the crickets don't get nibbled on, I put in carrots or some other type of vegetable. Here's the questions...

1. Is carrots the best to use, or is there some other vegetable or substance that feeds the crickets to help gut-load the crickets?

2. Is there anything to keep the crickets from climbing? Maybe scotch tape around the wood?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks

AJ

I never leave the crickets inside the cage. They get their fill and that's it. I feed them using tweezers, so there are none left over running around. You should never leave crickets in the cage because they might snack on your gecko if they are hungry even if you have fruits and veggies in the cage for them. If you have problem with crickets climbing try feeding it giant mealworms in a dish. I gutload both my crickets and giant mealworms with crushed dog kibble, but you can use chick mash and hog feed if you like. These food are high in protein and calcium which will be passed on to your gecko when it eats the prey insects.

You definitely want a different container for your crickets. One of those small "critter keepers" for cheap is good enough.

We use a commercial gut load product that is all natural called "cricket yummies", I found it makes a difference in the overall health of our gecko and smells tasty, but if you don't want to mess with a lot of feed around there are several ok brands of commercial cricket gut loads on the market. I prefer the ones that are both food and water, saves time and hassle. I think our nearest chain store carries three different kinds and our independent, the one we'd really buy from, will order whatever you want.
