Rare monitor at zoo

meretseger Aug 27, 2003 08:03 AM

Check this guy out... he's supposed to be a form of water monitor that occurs on (I swear to all that is holy that I am not making this up) Phucket Island in Indonesia. He's pretty good sized and solid black. I guess he's the only on in the US or something like that.

Togian, or something er ether? Im sure I got the spelling wrong.

They had it labled as a 'Khomain's water monitor' so... I dunno!

I think Togian waters have an all white underside. Not 100% sure though. That looks like melanistic water because its solid black from what I can tell. I think the melanistics are called komani phase waters. I don't think I spelled that right. Also I don't know if the melanistics are a species or a morph of some sort.

So maybe they got the names messed up. Or I got them messed up? Khomain and komani? They are sort of similar. John A should know the answer for sure. Try his site.

There is a melanistic form of water monitor that is called Khomain's water monitor. Its hard to say what the monitor in the pic is because you don’t see its belly,(SEE PIC) the Togians waters have a white belly. Check the pics of the Togians on my website.. What ever it is Togian or Khomain’s they are both very rare!!

Haha not the first time I've been wrong. I think I got Komani from one of those old monitor books or I read the name wrong. Thanks for clearing it up for me and others. By the way cool monitor in the pic.
