TimS Feb 06, 2008 09:54 PM

well this ismy first breeding rats and was wondering if the female normaly puts all pinks in group and half ass burries them? there are some fully burried and others on top not was wondering if this is normal or what? she is a very friendly pet mouse who dont care if i go in the cage for food water whatever she hops out and comes to climb on me anywhos just wondering if its normal for them to burry babies like that they are on cell sorb plus bedding and she moved most into a huge pile and burries it

I wouldn't worry too much about it, they may be moving and squirming around fighting for the nipple and I've even had some moms seperate the babies into two piles but this is (mice) and there was about 13-15 babies and in one pile can get cramped. Some will take off in growth (males) and occassionally or almost every litter you got the runt whose is getting run over by his or her siblings but they are so cute, but cuter in the belly of one of my snakes of course. Rats make great pets and they love to be rubbed on

TimS Feb 06, 2008 10:15 PM

i dont need to know about you and rubbing rats lol ok i wasnt sure cause half the pile was covered by heavy bedding lol im a worried first time daddy is all havent seen no nipple sucking yet tho they are in hallway and i walk past every so often tho i dont open up cage and move house to see so i guess they could be doing it lol another 3 days or so i should have another 15 on the ground

strictly4fun Feb 06, 2008 10:25 PM

once those little bastards get full they will lay down and fall asleep leaving the 2nd shift of suckers to suck or they will fall asleep sucking and hog it all and pee on their brothers and sisters below

rainbowsrus Feb 07, 2008 01:28 PM

They can be defensive, yours is more of a pet so whe trusts you. Trust me though, do pat attention when picking up a baby. Mommy rats can bite HARD, way worse than a snake!!!!

lol snatch and run lol are they still usualy protective over the babies when babies get to be almost wened size or is it just when the babies are lil

rainbowsrus Feb 07, 2008 05:03 PM

Well, in reality mine are not protective of the babies. Closest they get is a mom will grab up one pinky and run around the cage while I scoop up the rest. I've found I can get that last remaining baby one of two ways. Wait for her to set it down or just grab it and give a little tug, she does not want it hurt and only holds on loosley. Why you may ask are my rats not protective, it comes from years of "selective breeding" You see I have developed a basic set of "rat rules" for my colony.

1) Don't produce - fed off
2) Kill babies - fed off
3) Sick - fed off
4) Jumpy - fed off
5) Bite me - whacked on cement then fed off

After years of implementing the "rules" I have calm, non biting rats. When cleaning out my growout racks, large mortar tubs, I just reach in without even looking, way towards the back that is still under the screen that is covered with food and grab some body part. Whatever body part I grab, I use to pull the rat(s) out. They never bite me, not for real, They do nibble as part of their social order.

rainbowsrus Feb 07, 2008 10:05 PM
