Lizard Maker

mfoux Feb 06, 2008 11:42 PM

So I had this idea:
In dealing with problem feeders like baby GBKs we sometimes have to scent with lizards, right? What if there were a spray-on lizard scent? I did a little looking online and found a discontinued product by T-Rex called Lizard Maker that was supposed to make pinkies and other food items smell like lizards. So I'm wondering if a.) it ever worked, b.)if anyone else is doing this, and c.)have any of you guys tried a product like this and how did it work?
I'm assuming that if the product was discontinued then it either didn't work, wasn't marketed effectively, was found unsafe or that the owners of problem feeders felt that they didn't need such a product. I have, however, found that Lizard Maker is still offered for sale on some U.K. websites.
I've often wondered why there isn't something like this available. We can buy scents to attract deer, women and hummingbirds. We can repel mosquitos. Why not have a bottled scent that entices our stubborn little Lampropelti to feed?
So far I've only had one lizard eater that I could not switch to rodents (a speckled king, of all things), but it would have been easier with some form of scenting that didn't require me or my 11 year-old brother running around the yard catching anoles.
What do you guys think?

I have used Lizard Maker as well as many different things to scent pinks over the years, geckos, anoles, tuna juice, toads, chicken stock, etc.. And, Lizard Maker is the only thing that i have had absolutely no success with.. I still have a very old jar of Lizard Maker sitting on a shelf in my herp room that has not been opened in many years, but i do not consider it an option for stubbern feeders..

That said, if a similar product was produced i would still give it a try..

Unfortunately, the stuff is useless.

Thanks guys.
Maybe if I were a chemical engineer I'd try and tackle this one. It seems obvious that the product was discontinued because it didn't perform well, but that's not to say that some similar product couldn't work. I'm just surprised it's not out there yet.
All my snakes feed, even my stubborn ones, but am I stupid for seeing a potential market for such a product? I'd buy it just to make life simpler. Something I could keep on a shelf until needed and not have to kill, rub or cut a lizard.

On a related topic, does anyone sell frozen feeder lizards in bulk? I buy tons of frozen rodents and would consider keeping anoles on hand.

The stuff is worthless. I tried it just to be sure. If anything, it was a repellant for my baby mountain kings. It didn't work on any picky eaters. I use the real thing...i.e live lizards or thawed lizard blood to tip the pinkies with. It usually works like a charm. I'm sure someone could copy the natural scent of a scelop or skink, but it hasn't been perfected yet.
