Beardie Lighting Question

whoru9999 Feb 07, 2008 10:44 AM

Hello,

I haven't had beardies in a few years, and since then, they have come out with these compact flourescent bulbs for reptiles. I have seen a confusing mix of info on them. Some places say that they do not provide adequate UVB, and other sites say they are dangerous.

Does anyone use these for their beardies and what do you think about them?

Dan

I honestly dont know the science behind it but I bought a compact set up first, and noticed my juvenille beardie didn't seem to like it (wouldnt leave his eyes open very long,as if it was too bright!).I switched over to a fluorecent tube light (REPTISUN10.0)and noticed a big diff in activity, almost immediatley.

Sorry I don't have the link handy, but the compacts ARE bad for their eyes. Maybe someoe else will chime in.

Many of the compact UVB lights have been causing photo kerato conjuctivitus in many reptiles so its now recommended not to use them. I have used a Repti-sun 5.0 tubes/linears on my beardies and other lizards and they haven't caused any problems.

Here's the site that talks about it.......

Thanks everyone! I'm going to stick with the good old fashioned tube flourescents.....
