Gravid female question

Fekes Feb 07, 2008 11:37 AM

I was wondering if female Leos stop eating right before they lay? My female is due in the next week or earlier and she slowed eating and now stopped. She's restless and is on the move most of the time. Is this normal? I can see the eggs in her, maybe it won't even be a week now. She laid the first egg fine and I'm sure she slowed eating with that one too.

Thanks.

Oh and I have two humid hides in the cage so she has a choice. Nothing has changed since the last egg except the addition of the extra hide.

Yes, completely normal. Watch to make sure she does lay and everything goes well. (We don't want any egg binding.) But it is completely normal for females to stop eating, even those just looking to produce eggs will do it.

Alright that's awesome to know. I was getting worried becuase she went from eating like a machine to just shying off food. I took out the extra hide last night and she was pasing around, I am thinking looking for it? I put it back in today and she went in it and is digging around a bit. I think she wanted to lay in it.

I am keeping an eye on her. No problem with that.

Thanks

No problem, glad I could be of some help.

Oh, yeah, if she's digging she's ready to lay. Maybe even tonight. Good luck! Let us see some baby pictures if you're successful.

You were right! At about 10 pm last night she made her nest. I was up until 1 am trying to see if she would lay them but nothing.. This morning I took my brother to school and came home and found this.

Here they are.

A question though. I am thinking about incubating them in a clear container. Would that be a problem, do they need complete darkness?

brianlovescheese Feb 09, 2008 12:25 PM

Well, I've breed snakes before and they don't require darkness. I had them in clear containers. I would think geckos would be the same.

Is your incubator clear also? If you're just talking about room/ambient light thru one of those little window things I think you'll be fine. Bright lights are a no-no.

Yeah just regular room lights. They aren't even close to the tank though. I do have a red light, which is the heat source. That won't cause a problem will it?

Fekes Feb 09, 2008 07:33 PM

I have them incubating in a clear container in the gecko tank. It stays at 87 F so I know it won't change. There isn't direct light, just indirect light. The only light that is close is the heat lamp on top which is red. No real bright lights.

Not quite sure what kind of incu setup you've got going on there- you have the eggs sitting in a clear container with media inside the gecko cage? With a red light bulb how far away?

ABout half a foot away. It's not completely clear though.

geckogrl6 Feb 13, 2008 07:41 PM

I'm sorry, I'm still having trouble picturing your incu setup..... A red bulb 6 inches away may be enough to cause some problems. You could try completely burying the eggs to minimize light exposure. As long as they are not too far down, the babies should be able to wriggle out.
