shedding Q?

annaisagecko Feb 07, 2008 05:39 PM

hi,
i got my leo from a family that was moving out of state and didn't want to move his big cage or stress him out by the moving, so i got him and his nice big cage, cage stand and anything else they had for him,

well when i got him he was missing most of his toes (due to old shed being left on them i guess) and i believe "he" is actually a "she" but i went for so long thinking it was a boy i just by habit refer to her as a "he", so thats what they knew about geckos....

anyway the actual question is hes been having left shed on his mouth and nose and he just today hadn't finished shedding at all,

usually he starts shedding late in the day and works on it all night and then the next morning is done shedding, that has not been the case lately and i was wondering why because this has not happened before while i've had him,

hs in 30/35 gallon tank with reptile sand and two hides a water bowl a big stick and and flat rock one side of the cage is hotter then the other and he has a heat bulb and a UV bulb,

i've heard some people have a "wet" place in their cage is this what should be done?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you should have a "hide box" filled with moist vermiculite.
I like to use a rubbermaid container and cut a hole in the top. The cheap ones that are used for leftovers. You can get a 3 pack for around $ 2
This should take care of the problem.

goodevening.

well, this is pic I sent to my sister today(found out she's having a girl -had to share happy news with some more people!)

Anyways, Claiborne had a good shed before this pic. I mist when I can ( you can see droplets on Joal in the pic) -- 3-5 times a week. If I note chaulkiness, I spray/mist.

Like in the pics I keep a bowl of moist medium -- I slack and let it dry when expect no shedding.
Whether it's a white ( not dyed) towel piece, or sphagnum moss or vermiculite -- or both.

Over this I have a hide that's mostly covered with some texture, and under all this I have a under the tank heater.

I recently experimented with the white towel piece because I didn't want Josalen's wound to get bothered by the moss ; and Claiborne has two other moss boxes -- she kept digging a mess with the one in the pic -- so you can try that if no vermiculite or moss.

Sometimes if this does not work alone, I combine spraying down the cage, leo, moss parts -- so damp. Then cover the top of the screen where hide is under with a plastic paper/sheet protector ( or whatever you can improvise). And with heat, humidity is created to help shed. This possible damp area is part of my set ups for my 4 leos.

(Oh yeah! Excited about our new ceramic in our bathroom and in some of our cages! Noted in the pics, too.)

hopefully this helps.

Well, gotta go -- Joss

Yes -- it's possible for crickets to lay.

annaisagecko Feb 09, 2008 05:11 PM

thank you,

i just used "un-dyed" paper towels because thats what i had at the time,

and it turns out hes not so bright so i had to cut a hole in the side too! lol!

but he just finished shedding today "with my help" because it was still on his foot and hes was having trouble getting it off him self so i took a wet q tip and got it off.

thanks for your help everyone!

Do not feed loose crix on a sand substrate!!!! Very bad- you run a high risk of him/her injesting the sand and then they get impacted and all #$^%@$# breaks loose!

ok thanks for the info, ill start feeding he/she in a different container, whats the best way to do this? just leave him in the container with the cricks for a little while or what?

but either way hes to worse nor better, so Friday we're taking him to the vet if nothing else gets better,

and the only reason we were feeding him that way was because thats what they were doing when we got him, i think we might scratch the hole sand thing when this is all over though.

thanks for giving input!

I would suggest scrapping the sand, yeah. I dont think he absolutely needs to go to the vet yet.....By all means it is not likely to harm him, tho it will stress him some, depending on his indiv temperment. As long as he is eating and pooping regularly, he is probably OK. If you do take him to the vet, be sure to bring a fresh stool sample with you. Sometimes its hard to catch them fresh enough, but you can keep one in a little baggie in the fridge for a day or two. Ones that have already dried out will be no good. A fecal float is routine 1st step for most tummy/appetite issues. As for feeding crix, I have one of those travel plastic containers. It doesnt matter who goes in first. After 15 min, put the gecko back in his tank. I also suggest expanding his diet if possible. Personally, I dont like to feed crix if I can avoid it

by expanding his diet i'm assuming you mean mealies? or do you mean and/or wax and/or super worms?

yeah, I pretty much meant mealies, tho both wax and supers are good occasionally just for variety.
