Using storage sheds for reptiles

BRB_Russ Feb 08, 2008 11:32 AM

Has anybody ever used an airconditioned storage shed for use in reptiles and breeding projects? I was just thinking it would be nice to have like a 10x10 storage shed where you could control the climate and it wouldnt take up space in your house etc

has anybody ever used one? If so did you tell the owners what you were doing with it? Where they ok with it?

From your post I'm thinking you're talking about a storage unit at a storage facility? I would think that would not be allowed. Plus what about electricity for the cages?

yes im talking about those mini storage places.

They generally have air conditioned units etc i figure i could just set up a heating system to make it into a 'snake room' type habitat. It was really just a thought because i don't have a lot of space at the place i am living at now, it would be nice to have a third party place to house the majority of them. . . was just a thought

i called a local place and asked about keeping reptiles and got a "no freaking way" from them, i should have assumed as much

that sounds like they may get the police involved and they will get the police involve once they find out and that is not good publicity but I could be way off though. I would love to have a 6 x 10 shed for rodents though, now that would be awesome but if I keep buying snakes at my rate with the rate of income I have coming in, I can easily build this in about 7 years Rodent racks are the way to go but you are talking about snakes so ditch those aquariums you have and buy some animal plastics, boaphiles or a tub rack from animal plastics housing 10 iris tubs that are 34 inches long which is plenty but not for that hog you got so females in cages and males in tubs when not breeding to utilize the space more efficiently. Sorry for babbling but thought it could help Russ and don't forget about that salmon (I love 'em so much) and Guyana and I also plan to pick up a Guyanan from Johnathan Brady when Rose goes again next year but no plans of breeding just a pet. take care
Bob

Ive actually got a Boamaster 4'x30"x12" cage for the hogs, im starting to try to get better enclosures for everything (nice stuff not tanks) but its slow going as any good snake enclosure is $150
even more when my choice in snakes happens to be on the big side.

Just have to take baby steps one enclosure at a time.

Russ,
...Seems like an interesting idea. I have seen a few of those rental storage places that had trouble making a go of it and so allowed very small businesses to work out of them. If you could find one like that they might be more inclined to let you keep reptiles in one.
