carmel albino health issues, help!

george-kozak Feb 08, 2008 01:39 PM

I have resently baught a 350 gram male carmel albino. He is beautiful has no kinks and appears to be well fed. After his arrival I had put him in quarentine in a private cage properly heated with good substrate, hide box and water.
There is some sort of problem. When he climbs he appears uncoordinated. Climbs sideways, out of balance, and falls over. When at rest he seems to always be in strange positions, head hanging upside down over the water bowl or resting sideways or upside down on the hidebox, just not right.
I heard this is a quite common disorder among carmel albinos.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO OR SUGGESTIONS?
Is this longtem? Or do they grow out of it?
Does this pass on to the young?
Is there a treatment?
Thanks,
George

Sounds neurological (i.e. the spider).
I would get a hold of the breeder and demand your money back, unless his "condition" was disclosed prior to purchase. I would also suggest you go to the BOI and put this breeder before he sells any more of his defective animals to unsuspecting buyers.

Ive been on this forum for two years as well as talking to other breeders and I have never heard of CA's having any problem besides possible kinking. I personally own CA's and none of them exhibit any of the signs you mention. As already stated. Get your money back fast and call this breeder out on the BOI.

Hello,
Thanks for your response. This is my first time on this forum. What is BOI?

George,

I just sent you a link. Not sure if you need to set up a login to see the BOI but you should. It will help you out in the long run. So sign up(its free) and post your experience and all the facts and see what happens. But as Tosha stated below try and work it out with the breeder/seller before bashing anyones name.
You catch more flies with honey then vinegar. And good luck.

How long have you had this snake?

Don't dismiss it as a trait to the morph - get in touch with the breeder and discuss it further with him and work out your return options.

The snake could well be sick so be sure you are practicing excellent quarantine - you don't want to be spreading IBD or something through your collection.

Good luck!

Its common for Caramels to do what you're saying. I have some that have it and some that do not. Just like some spiders have the wobble and some don't. They all eat fine, breed fine, but when you pick them up they seem to lack a sense of which way is up sometimes. No worries, your caramel is fine. Not a Health Issue!
