Yes the Aussie Freshie is a wonderful little crocodile and quite a nerotic creature. I am speaking from first hand crocodile catching experience.
I have caught over one hundred of these animals in the Australian Northern Territory on a few trips to Australia. Many crocodiles caught were 12-15 years old and still only slightly under one meter in length.
The "dwarf" freshie populations if I recall, happens due mostly to lack of food.
Genetics may play a role, the smaller animals locked in isolated pockets breed with smaller animals and over time develop into smaller than average populations.
Dr.Adam Britton or Dr. Grahame Webb could provide more in depth answers. I do not recall if genetic factors has been proven in the case of this species becoming a "dwarf".

This is very interresting, Id love to get my hands on some of those.. but that wount happend I guess.
Must be the most threatend crocodilian in the world!?
A friend of mine I spoke with today worked at ARP and told me like you that they are total nutcases
Would be cool if they could do some genetics work on theme, would be cool if they show to be true dwarfs. I mean they do occure with other reptiles like the super dwarf reticulated and the "newly" found dwarf burmese python.
well thank you so much for the info!
