Cooling Down My Cages

tylersdad Aug 27, 2003 11:00 AM

I have custom built 6 2'x 2'cages for my corn snakes but I can not get the temps down below 88 degrees F. At this point I am not using a heat source of any kind. Does ANYBODY have any suggestions on how to cool down melamine habitats? They all have screen tops so there is plenty of ventalation.

Hi Jonathan,

BTW, that's my husband's name too.

As you can tell from my forum ID, we are in Ohio. It's been pretty hot the past 10-14 days, and we also had a problem with our tank getting too hot. We not only turned off our heat, but we also put a couple of ice cubes in the water. The water is in one of those dog food bowls and the snake hides under it, so that probably kept the hiding spot cool enough. I'm planning to do that again tonight, since we're supposed to drop the temp at night. (to you experienced folks, does that sound like a good way to cool the temp?)

Oh, and tonight it's been 1 week since our snake ate "her" first meal here, so we'll be offering her another pinky tonight. This time, I actually have some film and I'm going to try to take some pictures.

You also, in your reply to me last week, said that you had some potential names, what were they again and do you have anymore?

We are pretty sure that our snake is a girl. We looked at the websites that have tail sexing instructions, and there isn't much tail after the vent. Not that it really matters that much, I don't know if we'll ever get to the point that we're wanting to breed snakes. We have a male cat, named Misty. When he was a baby, I showed him to lots of people and they all said it was a girl. Well, he has very fluffy gray hair and wasn't very well endowed, so it appeared that he just had a couple of little matts of fur. When I took "her" to the vet to get her spayed, the vet actually thought he was a girl too, and attempted to spay her and was surprised to find no uterus. That was the day we all discovered the truth. The vet didn't charge me anything that day and apologized all over himself. Once the cat healed, he neutered him free of charge. The name, however, has stuck. It's hard to have a cat for nearly a year and then change the name. So, he's Mr. Misty now. Sorry for going off on something totally not snake related

Anyway, I'm afraid our snake is going to end up named "Snakie", the only other thing that comes out naturally is "Baby". Need some name suggestions.

This may be kind of "CORNY" get it? I named my snakes by what they are. My anery is Annie, my amel is Mel, my normal, Norma and so on. Only one I couldn't come up with is my snow. His name is lightning because he's so fast and looks like a lightning bolt. Just some suggestions.

Sorry to get off topic there. I'm in Texas and it gets pretty hot here too. The ice cubes sound like a good idea I'm gonna try that myself. My snakes spend alot of time hiding under the water bowl during the day only getting active at night. Good luck

I had a male normal named Norm and a female normal named Norma.
Hey it worked for me.
Now I have to call them long distance...lol
They flew the coop.
