Trinidad Trip Pics (some non-herp).

Matt Harris Feb 09, 2008 11:04 AM

I returned a few weeks ago from 9 days in Trinidad. We spent most of the time (3days) hiking the northern range for z'anana(bushmaster) , balsain (fer-de-lance) and macajuel(boa constrictor) as well as birding. Also spent 1 day in Caroni Swamp to see the Ibis roost and look for tree boas. Hiked to Aripo Caves to see the Oilbird colony. Spent 1 1/2 days in Nariva Swamp looked for anaconda, mata mata and red-breasted macaws (saw none of these, but did see 20+ red mantled howler monkeys, toucans and many raptors). Also hiked to Tamana Caves to witness the exodus of 2 million bats of 12 species at night (literally a river of bats exiting at an average of 400 bats/second!).

This is a small sample of what we saw...most of the rest are birds, mammals and inverts. Enjoy. All pics were taken with Nikon D200 and D70 using either 18-70mm, 80-200mm or 105mm macro lenses.
