How do the Hovabators work?

ANIMALmenagerie Feb 09, 2008 12:24 PM

I am soon going to be breeding crested geckos. The thing is I want to use a hovabator but I really don't know how they work. Do they have a thermostat so the temperature stays constant? Do you just keep the eggs in deli cups inside the incubator? I want to use the thermal air flow one, so this is all pertaining to this model. Thank you.

i have one with the air flow. it works great for me as i breed drgons. no it does not have a set temp. what it does is turns it self on reaches its temp and shuts of and the temp will slowly drop but then the incubator will turn back on and bring it back to the right temp. it will take about a day to have it set up and ready so that you know that it is at the right temp. use a digital thermometer to set the temps. i use low deli cups but i think you can put the eggs on the bottom. its as basic as you can get. there are a lot of better ons out there that you can set the temp. just do your research and make a good decision.

Hovabators go on and off. It is recommended to keep the eggs away from the heating element, as temps fluctuate the most there. You will need a thermometer and get the temp set well before the eggs are laid (takes me a few days to get the incubator to the right temp).

I made incubators out of styrofoam boxes (hovabators are styrofoam) and placed water on the bottom with a 5 gal aquarium heater. This worked far better than my hovabators, and for about the same price (an adjustable aquarium heater is about the price of the hovabator). I've used cooling racks and egg crate to keep the egg containers above water level.

Also, I don't recommend the air flow model, as I've heard it may dry out the eggs. I used a standard model, had 100% hatch rate while using it for snakes and leopard geckos.
