David Letterman & Cobra

heart4herps Feb 09, 2008 01:26 PM

Did anyone catch the show? It was pretty funny with Dave running behind the scenery brandishing his flute like a weapon. Jack Hanna was yelling at the handler and the hyper snake was all over the place!

Here's a link to the video.

If only snakes could talk...I'm sure that cobra would have been rolling on the floor laughing.

Friggin' hilarous! Although, that had to be some of the sloppiest handling of a hot snake that I'd ever seen.

Being a former hot keeper. That was very poor handeling. It is compleetly dangerous to have a snake that leathal in a wicker basket. It also puts the audience in jeopardy. These guys are porfessionals? This is how accidents happen. I am wondering if it was a venomoid. Good forbid that snake got loose and crawled into a crevice in the studio. Just my opinion

I agree 100%! As funny as it was, I hate to think someone watching would think they can be that careless with a venomous snake!!! I was really surprised that Jack Hanna and Bob Clark - two professionals - would let things get that out of hand. I also think it was probably a venomoid.

Still, every time I watch it, I laugh!

The cobra in question was most certainly not hot and for one reason in particular. There are NO hot snakes allowed within city limits at any time. Whenever you see a cobra, rattler, viper, etc on late night tv you can bet your savings that it's been cut. Yes Bob affirms that it's still hot, but to say otherwise would utterly disappoint the entire crowd.
Funny clip, thanks for posting

It's hard to tell from the online video, but actually it was Jack that said he was intact. Bob pretended to be too focused on the snake to answer the question...

Good catch Larry, you're right on that one.

Cut or not, don't try that at home folks. I've seen snakes that were supposed to be venomoid produce venom. You can never be too careful.

Dave's reaction is absolutely priceless still.

True! A little piece of gland could have been left in and grew back. You can never be too sure. Also a secondary infection would most likely occur. This sets a real bad example for people who do not have experience or knowledge with venomous reptiles. I live on the east coast and usually attend the Hamburg shows. Let me tell you I see Black spitters for $45. No joke. And I have seen people that have no business owning them buy them. A young boy bought an Egyptian cobra for $100 and took it home and kept it in a 20 gallon long with a screen cover. He had a little brother in the house and told his parents it was a corn snake. A friend of mine did some investigating found out about it. Contacted the parents and offered to give the kid the $100 bucks. The parents were thankfull, and the snake went to a proper facility. That situation could have been a night mare.

Before I knew anything about venomoids I was offered, and excepted, the opportunity to hold a venomoid monacled cobra about that size in the back room of a pet store. The cobra was about as calm as what's on the video, and I held him with no hook. After a few minutes he calmed down. I even got my girlfriend to touch him. As I handed the snake back to the guy who worked there, he told me about the venomoid procedure and how it's not 100% effective. Had I known, I may not have held the snake. But I'm actually glad I did.

The only thing between a venomous (maybe, the hot/not debate still rages on as i type) and a popular tv host is a snake stick, and a wicker basket lid. Hmm...This is why I don't like snakes on tv shows. They generally don't do anything to inform, and just serve to further sensationalize the animal. If they were to stay seated, even if the snake was just in a portable enclosure, and talk about the snake, that would be better than what happened here, with David Letterman freaking out. Wouldn't have helped much if he woulda gotten bitten either.

One last thing. At the end, that quote "There is no off position on the genius switch", I think they misspelled "ON".
