Caging/Lighting Question.

Royreptile Feb 09, 2008 03:00 PM

I plan on purchasing some new cages for my dragons soon, and I would like a few questions answered from the individuals on this forum who undoubtedly know more on the subject than I do. I am looking for cages which are easily cleaned and attractive. I have used both wooden and glass cages in the past with success, but they both have disadvantages I would prefer to avoid if I am to buy new cages.
As for cage size, ideally I would want something close to 48" by 24" by 24", but preferably no taller. I have been considering the 60" by 24" by 24" by Showcase cages for a while, but the cost is a bit excessive for me. Also, I was considering using the 125 watt Exo Terra mercury vapor bulbs to create a basking spot, but I am worried that 24", or really closer to 18", is not enough distance away from the bulb. Is that fear a valid one?
What would the experts here recommend as far as a nice 48" by 24" by 24" cage, and lighting options to go along with it?
Thanks, and I look forward to some answers.

I share your worry that a MVB would be too close. A linear fluorescent would also provide usable UVB over a larger area of the cage as well.

I looked at all the commercially available enclosures and found they all have disadvantages. My decision was to just build my own.
