Many photos from recent african trip

mfezi Feb 09, 2008 03:26 PM

OK, its been a while.

I headed to South Africa for almost three months, did 5 countries, 20 000 miles in a car, drove across Africa twice, saw many species and unique behaviors. These are some of the photos, the sheer volume of them is hard to get through, but as they come out, I will trickle them out

Countries visited South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Senegal. We were in spitting distance (< a few miles) of Namibia and Botswana, but did not see the benefit of crossing the border.

With me during this whole trip was, now regular travel mate, Devon Massyn. We spent many days and nights together and did very well. Shot Mate!!

Photo credits Devon Massyn/Donald Schultz... too hard to figure which is which
I was in SA for a week with friends, then 20 days of eco tours, then around the cape, back to Johannesburg, into Swaziland, up to Zimbabwe, into Mozambique, through Swaziland to Durban, back to Johannesburg, fly to Dakar, and we chilled in a nice French villa just south of Dakar for 5 days.. needed a break

viandy Feb 09, 2008 10:16 PM

Great pics!
I've been wondering if you're having any luck with Aspidelaps. Nice to see photos of some wild ones.

mfezi Feb 10, 2008 10:26 AM

In one area in the Namaqualand, A.l.lubricus was the most common snake seen.

We found 3 of the 5 species of Aspidelaps as a group, and they are one of my favourite animals.

Do you still use pillstrom tongs? Is all i saw was midwest.
Oh and nice!!! i like the cobra biting the glove!

mfezi Feb 10, 2008 03:38 PM

I changed to Midwest this trip, and was pleasantly surprised. It took a lot less to switch over than I though, and now i travel everywhere with a single glove and collapsible tongs, can take on pretty much anything with that combo i reacon

Eimon Feb 11, 2008 03:46 AM

Sir, someone needs to teach you what those tongs are really for.

mfezi Feb 11, 2008 09:22 AM

Reptiles and Birds are closely related , and I am torture testing the midwest line... but I lost the plot when the ostrich turned towards me

cheers, d

SnakesAndStuff Feb 11, 2008 10:14 AM

Down with Class Aves! Birds are nothing more than glorified reptiles with feathers :D

ehehe, sorry, I'm just trying to see if there are any ornithologists in the crowd to see if I can get their feathers ruffled over some cladistics :D

On a realistic note I've actually seen some comparative anatomy textbooks that are shifting away from supporting Aves as its own class. The living dinosaurs (birds) are all around us.

mfezi Feb 11, 2008 10:48 AM

I know this is controversial and i know that free-handling is not promoted by anyone

Here are some photos of me free handing an ostrich near the Kruger

SnakesAndStuff Feb 11, 2008 10:54 AM

How dare you post a photo of you free handling such a creature on a public forum! Just think about the public outrage that will shortly ensue!

Once again, nice pics.

Eimon Feb 12, 2008 04:01 AM

Now that's much better. Tongs are for sissys, at least when it comes to birds. BTW- doesn't Loren work any more....lol.

mfezi Feb 13, 2008 11:17 PM

I am trying my best to drag Loren down the field herping street, and he has skills, and has field herped quite a bit. He also does every show known to man... so i guess that counts as work

hanging out under heat lights burns up my brain cells!!

mfezi Feb 10, 2008 03:41 PM

because I travel the world and work with snakes, customs takes a particular interest in my bags, probably not a good idea

That being said, we lost 7 hours of footage between South Africa and Senegal... very similar feeling to a firm crotch kick.. again and again and again etc

d

blakemolone Feb 10, 2008 03:44 PM

Lol that ostrich picture is hilarious!

Deuce Feb 10, 2008 04:04 PM

Amazing pics Don, Jesus!!!!!

po Feb 11, 2008 06:36 PM

well a crotch kick is probably worse for you then me, im a girl, but i can imagine!

how do you get a job that lets you do things like that!?! im stuck fixing the poor neglected pets here in the us, and never get to see the good stuff!!

Funny, I was working in a Humane Society just 3 years ago!! Strange how things change

I have a eco-tourism company,
am the National Sales Manager for T-Rex (new position), write, photograph and film. I also try and fund as much personal field research as possible in Africa, usually spending at least 3 months of the year in the field.

fortunate, maybe, lucky, NO
