Heat Source Question

rottenweiler9 Feb 09, 2008 03:50 PM

Should a snake be able to get its whole body underneath the heat source at once, coiled or uncoiled, or even being coiled part in part out.

Thank you

Jeff

I feel that a snake should be able to lay coiled with it's entire body pretty much directly under the heat source. If they're unable to do so with proper temperature gradients, they won't be able to effectively warm up their entire body, at the same time, which I feel is necessary.

With larger snakes this usually requires placing the heat source a little further away from the end of the enclosure to allow room on both sides of the line/beam of heat. One reason why spotlights & floodlights aren't generally good heat sources for big snakes unless more than one is used for the area.

Catch ya later!

thats exactly what I did--
We made light boxes and each light box can hold 2 lights-- we can add lights or take them out- depending on the temps outside--
summer we use 2 lights in one box. (we have 2 boxes per cage)-- winter we use 3-4 lights.

and the light boxes are on one end- but about 1 foot away from the back wall...

works great- i find her smack in the middle a lot of the time!
