Hognose shed

LinsCubb Feb 10, 2008 09:42 AM

I have a western hognose and have had it since the 2007 Daytona reptile expo, in August. He eats religously and is fed once a week hopper mice which he gobbles up. He hasnot shed since I got him. He is a sub adult. checked humidity and temps, all are good. Is it the mice? I know they are not nutritionally ideal but he will only eat them no rats. any advice as to why he has not shed yet? thanks!

Hognose don't seem to be big time shedders. I have had mine for almost two years, and in that time my female has shed 4 times and my male only 3 times. Others have also said that their hoggies don't shed as frequently as they would have thought. I wouldn't worry about how often they shed, but when they do shed they don't have any trouble.

I second Robert's statement, my hogs shed much less than any of my other snakes. As long as their feeding, I wouldn't worry about it.

My experience w/ W. Hogs (I currently keep 2) has been quite similar to those of the previous 2 posters. I've had my '05 male W. Hog almost since he was hatched, and I think he's only shed 3 or 4 times since then. Overall they're awesome snakes. Hope you enjoy yours.
