cute... but under 4 " carapace

The pet store I visit for supplies here in the Grand Rapids are (for golfdiva: it's V.I. Pets on S. Division in Cutlerville) has some very cute but too-small-to-sell tortoise babies. They have hatchling/baby Sulcatas tortoises, leopard tortoises, and red foot tortoises - all way out of my price range, and I don't have a place to put them for when they become adults (and I wonder how many people who are thinking about buying from the store know that... the staff was knowledgeable enough, though, to comment to me that the Sulcatas were tiny now but would become huge).

I wish the regulation would be changed so this store could legally sell these babies to educated customer (perhaps they the 4 " minimum applies to turtles that are not classified as tortoises) that wild chelonians are not caught nearly as much.

There is no doubt that law is very antiquated, and needs to be updated.

Yes, the V.I. Pets on the north end of town where I often go, have baby sulcatas, etc. It has also been my experience that the staff has been knowledgable and helpful. So I'm thinking they know about the law, they just have some way of getting around it!
