are eggs without a mate possible?

silver07 Feb 11, 2008 12:30 AM

Sorry if this is a stupid question i just havent been able to find the answer anywhere. My roomate has i believe a peachthroat monitor that he came home to with a huge stomache and doesnt know what coudl have caused this. It is also very lethargic and only lays in the same spot all the time. His parents said a week ago it was trying like crazy to escape its cage... could it have eggs without having a mate? is there anything else that could be wrong with it? thanks for any help

I don't understand your post. Does your roommate have the huge stomach or does the peachthroat have a huge stomach?

holygouda Feb 11, 2008 12:50 AM

haha. I'd bet its probably both.

I find this to be a serious matter so i dont understand your post. Of course the peach throat is the one with the huge stomach. it is also very lethargic. he says it used to soak all the time only now it has not moved from under the basking light. any help would be greatly appreciated!

it isn't a serious post because you haven't posted any serious info. if you want someone to try and help diagnose a monitor issue, through the internet, you MUST give husbandry and setup details. how big is the animal? what is the history and age? what is the cage setup? what are the temps? etc.

without it, no one can possibly, responsibly, help.

maybe it has a huge stomach because all you feed it is peanut butter and black olives. no one knows because you haven't specified otherwise, ya know?

I had a Water Monitor for 12 years, about the 10th year she would produce eggs every year without a mate. She would lay 15 eggs. When she died she had never been with another monitor her whole life.

Its also possible that your monitor could have lived another 12 years.

The point here is, not possibilities, instead its about probabilities. There are thousands of possibilities. Its more about probabilities. Its very probable that this monitor is sick. So take it to a vet. That is, if he wants it to live. Cheers

Is eggs or something else.
Its completely normal for them to produce eggs without a mate, in fact ackies have been known to produce eggs at 3 months old. My big albig had made a few batches and absorbed 2, got blocked up with one clutch, of which surgery resulted. This was due my fault. I was switching her from the old cage to the newer bigger cage at the time, and got the dirt all wrong, as well some other mistakes.
A female water that waits 10 years to produce eggs? Seems a bit strange to me, Ive seen waters produce eggs at 1.5 years old and small sizes.

Once again its my roomate with the peach throat. I dont appreciate all the pointless responses i've received. But thank you to the people that answered my question.
