The Mysterious Blue Boa.

madisonrecords Feb 11, 2008 08:09 AM

Last post for a while, but this is one that has slipped by me for years; " The Blue Boa. " Do they even exhist, YES! I will never forget the first time I seen one and that was 15yrs ago. I was a young guy who loved boas and could not afford to get allot of the ones that I had already and one day I ran into a guy from North Carolina that had the Holy Grail of all Boas. He had a Peruvian female that was brought into the country illegaly and this female was in horrible shape and dark and dingy. Within several months he kept in contact with me and told me that she had shed several times and was not only looking great, but was Blue! I did not believe him and so he sent me some Polaroid pictures in the mail and to my astonishment; " she was the purest Blue you could imagine! " We were to ignorant back then to do any Polaroid manipulations; " she was really Blue. " A year later, he called me and told me that she had produced a litter of Peruvian babies and was bred to a average Peruvian male and 50% of the babies were " Blue as Rubys. " He sent me Poloaroids once again of the babies and my GOD they were so Blue it was not even funny! He wanted $500 a piece for them and I got hit with some really hard financial situations and could not afford even one. I was told that my Old Pals the " Barkers " had actually gotten one of those Blue babies, but I never confirmed it? One day, I hope that another Blue Boa will spring up and wow, if it could be a B.C.C. I know it happens, but they are obviously the most rare color of all the spectrum that a Boa can come in. Maybe one day? Below, is a picture of a male Suriname that I use to have and he was truly Blue, not gray. However, he was nothing compared to the brilliant Blue of those Peruvians............John

When I was in junior high school the teacher that I worked with brought back some boas from a trip to South America. He brought back an axanthic/anerythristic green anaconda which was all grey with dark black spots. He also brought back a blue red tail boa. It had the reddest tail of any boa I have ever see; I don't know if that was in part due to the blue color of the boa. The boa was truely blue. Even though it was more than 30 years ago those 2 boas remain 2 of the best boas I have ever seen. I have been looking for similar animals since and haven't found anything that comes close.

back in those days it was Locality Boas that ruled the Market and so more concentration was given to them to be able to locate the truly spectacular. You do not see Locality Boas hardly anymore like the ones from the old days of " questionable smuggling, Ha! " However, you tell people the stories and they just sound like " Fish Stories " to them, because most of us do not have the pictures to prove it. Those Peruvians, though " were as Blue as a Crayon " and no doubt are not around anymore..........John

That sounds pretty darn cool! I'd love to see a picture of one. I'm sure the contrast of the red tail does amplify the blue color to some degree. One thing though.... "blue as rubys"... aren't rubies red?

I have a het for albino sharp strain male that has a blue cast to him and very dark eyes. His eyes never lighten they stay dark.

A body shot, the camera washes out a lot of the blue.

Jared Horenstein posted this Blue Costa Rican on another forum. Neat color, especially for those familiar with the other phases in Costa Rican boas.

That is definately a sharp looking Boa and I have seen some here and there that have nice Blue tendencies to them, but never any like the ones I mentioned........John

No doubt, nice. Once again, nothing like the ones from the days of old. One day, maybe another one will surface, but in 15yrs since I seen the first ones, I have yet to see any with the true depth and purity of Blue. Stands to reason that it is truly a rare color........John

This is not my photo and I copied from the old Photopoint days in the 90's. I think it may have been Jim Pomaville who posted it and I have it labled as a Guyana. It looks like it may have been a true blue one.

That is as close to those Peruvians that I have ever seen! Wonderful picture of a very rare phase of Boa.........John

Not saying it's not blue, but that pic IMO is clearly oversaturated.
