Mexicana Hybrids

Nightfall Feb 11, 2008 10:58 AM

I am planning on breeding my two Mexicana Kingsnakes, or rather, am seriously considering it.

I have a male "Greeri"

and a female hybrid, from what I was told when I bought her at least(about a year ago)- Crossed with L.mexicana mexicana from what I gathered. I wish I knew more...

She does look like a milk phased Thayeri, but with hybrids it's hard to tell.

Has anyone ever tried to cross these? Were the offspring fertile? were there any offspring to begin with?

Do you think I should go ahead with the breeding? The female is 4 years old and the male would hit the 18 months mark after brumation.

I would love to hear thoughts and opinions on the matter,

Oren.

Well I was told that the female is a cross between a Thayeri and a pyromilana piromilana.... I have absolutely no idea what "pyromilana piromilana" is though

Okay, sorry. I found out.

She is a product of breeding Arizona mt. Kingsnake to a Thayeri.

Are these considered Hybrids or Integrades?

Also, are these fertile or sterile?

thanks in advance,

Oren.

Your greeri looks like a classic pure example to me. They are not so easy to obtain nowadays due to a ban on export of all herps from Mexico. Therefore I would seriously consider obtaining a pure female greeri to breed him with. Then you could produce both hybrids and pures. Just be careful when aquiring a female greeri, there are alot of hybrids and crosses being sold unintentionally as pure.

Oh believe you me, I am trying. The moment I get a whiff of a female Durango going out for sale, I will pick it up...
But they are quite the rarity here as well, I imagine they are going to remain a rarity here as well if indeed all Mexico herps have been banned from export(yish, I really like the Mexicana group).

Well, I am going to gather as many of the little fellas as I possibly can.

Thanks

You may have to get a hatchling, and you may have to pick them up as a pair... I would not just wait on an adult female to turn up if really want to breed the guy. Worst case you will end up getting him two females if you pick the hatchling up now and something bigger turns up later.

Who said I am waiting on an adult female?
As soon as one is available, neonate, hatchling, whichever, I will go for it.
But they are extremely uncommon here. It is actually more likely to find an adult female for sale than for someone to actually have a breeding pair whose hatchlings he is selling...

Will keep my eyes peeled though.

As long as you are in the US you will have it easy with overnight shipping... There are a lot of breeders that have Greeri, but it seems like they tend to produce a limited number of that flavor with a focus on Thayeri and Mex-mex.

Just start making some calls and make sure you get yourself on a waiting list...
