i need advice with lethargic dragon.

scottfox Feb 11, 2008 07:32 PM

hello, my names casey, i havent posted on this site in years. i have 1.1 dragons. the males name is hombre and the female is molly. i recently came into possession of molly. she is a result of a daichu and a german giant/sandfire. hombe is a citrus/sandfire. i only recently got molly from a local breeder here in gainesville, fl. she has been here 2 days and 2 nighs.

im concerned because she doesnt seem to be eating. i always have a bowl of kale and yellow squash in her tank, and ive been putting in large crickets. she only eats a few of them, and only when they get close to her head. she never stands on her legs, she lies down, and if she mves se only crawls, without her belly ever coming of the ground. i have a 100 watt bulb on her and a uvb light, her substarte is shelf liner, she is 1 year of age, umm, she is in a 20 gallon (for now). i dust her crickets with calcium. also the breeder said she only eats about 5-6 crickets a day. she will eat supers, but i only gave her a few. sh doesnt seem to be sleeping, just not moving. my main concern is that she doesnt stand on her legs. is she just stressed from the move? thank you for readin this. sorry its so long.

I would feel her bones to make sure they are firm. If they are not, she might have calcium deficiency due to bad care with her previous owner. That could be one reason she isn't walking. Also, 100 watt bulb in a 20 gallon might be a bit too much, but it wouldn't stop her from walking around. Its good that shes eating, though I would say you need to change the content of her salad. Can you post a picture? Do you know the conditions she was under in the care of her previous owner?

Hi
use a digital tempreader with extra probe to measure if the hotspot reach 105-110 .
i also would sugest do a fecal exame ,animals who have parasites also r very letharcic and eat not so much.
look for a good reptile veterian for that .

it also could be she whas in brumation ????
that also give same symptoms not eat much and letharcic.

i've felt her bones, and then felt myother beardies bones. its kind of hard to tell, but they might be a little softer, so ive been dusting her food but i doesnt matter if she wont eat someone recommended soaking them in calcium water, will that work? also, her previous owner kept her in a 55 gal breeder, had uvb and heat, fed collard greens, and he asid she would eat 5-6 crickets a day. hombre will eat 30-40 a day, s that to much?

I would have a reptile vet give you an opinion on whether she has a calcium deficency. If the dragon is calcium deficient then the vet can give her a calcium injection or prescribe liquid calcium. Both treatments give better faster results.

I agree with the other posters. I'd bring her to the vet and have her tested for parasites and MBD.

I have 2 Bearides, both youngins, When I got my female, she did not eat or move much for 2-3 days, then BOOM she was eating as much as I could give her, The move sometimes stresses em a bit, Let her chill, explore her new house, and keep offering the food.
I was told by my breeder not to worry inless this attitude lasted longer then 4 days.
day 3 she started eating...
Good luck

i have had her for a week now. she just had a bowel movement, and it looked alright to me, very healthy. she is kind of irregular about eating, she will eat a few mealworms if i put em in front of her head, but she ignores crickets and veggies. she might have eaten a few veggiers i cant tell. she still wont lift herself up, but she does seem to be moving more. my question is if i should put hr in the larger tank with the male, will they mate if i do? or will he recognize that she isnt ready to mate? also if i leave the temperature as it is, will that keep them from mating. thanks.

Hi
i would not put a male with her .
she need to used to new enviroment first.
could be she stil little bt in brumtation and new home.
i would first leave her alone .
if you put a male with ehre he wil mate dont matter what you do .
no meal worms i not give those ,they can give impaction.
supers r better r phoenix r silkworms .

OMG! lol. I don't know how to say it more strongly. If she has MBD and she develops eggs where will the calcium to shell them come from, if her bones are already deficient?

I can't say this strong enough. You took in a dragon not in the best of health. Even in the best circumstances you need to quarentine her at least 30 days! Personally I wouldn't even consider putting her with a male this season based on your supplied information. There is always next year. For now, get her a proper sized enclosure for her to recover in.
