15 year old Leo...

DRep Feb 11, 2008 08:04 PM

Hello all, I used to post on KS occasionally, but mainly just lurk here and there now. Anyway, I've got a female Leopard Gecko approaching the 15 year mark. She'd been bred many years ago and all eggs were good and hatched, even sold some babies to a former KS member. About two years ago, her appetite got smaller and she isn't as active a hunter (mainly eats superworms, though). Since then, she's been pretty stable though. My question is, what are the oldest ages of leos any of you have kept? How many years could I expect from this girl? Just curious as I've had her longer than all my other reptiles, even my dog. Thanks for any comments

20-25 years with good care is usually what is considered a good approximate lifetime for a pet leo. Breeding females tend to have a shorter life due to the stress and nutritional loss due to egg production. On the other end, I believe Tremper has reportedly had geckos live into their 30s.

If she is no longer breeding, she certainly will slow down her eating, as well as a winter slow down. However, if she was bred heavily she could be entering the autumn of her life and would certainly start slowing down just like elderly humans. What her sheds more carefully and offer her whatever food she finds easiest to eat. It is, after all, her retirement.

Here's to a few more years (at least) of happy retirement. Take care.

Yeah, she was only bred once, but she retained sperm and as a result laid a few clutches. Hopefully she'll stick around for a few more years though. Right now I'm just giving her whatever space and food she needs. Thanks for the input though, I'll keep everyone updated!

A very good buddy of mine had a female since she was 3 weeks old and she lived for 22 years and 8 months.
