Small Chondros and housing?

zeroto4legs Feb 12, 2008 08:26 AM

I was wondering if you where to put a chondro(like one that is 15-18 inches) in a bigger cage such as liek a 2 ft cage with more places to hide, more branches, leaves to hide under and such, would it stress him/her out to the point of not eating, and maybe even death. or would it be like just giving him a bigger place to move around and explore?
thanks for the help.
also has anyone ever used like a moss type substrate for their chondros, good? bad? or just never tried it because of a reason?

the more complete chondro is amazing can put it down, i even been going late to my vet tech classes because of it.
amazing book tho.

It depends quite a bit on the baby itself. Some would still be stressed to the point of not eating, and others (like my sorong type) would have been just fine. She's very laid back. I would recommend staying with a smaller enclosure for now until you can gauge the animal better. As far as moss, I use sphagnum moss in all my aroboreal cages now. I used to use shredded cyprus, but my friend used moss and I find the chondros just love it. They even hang out in it once in a while and if some gets on food, it doesn't cause a problem like the hard pieces of cypress can. It's resistant to mold and holds humidity well. I even have it in my amazon babies cages now to offer them more places to hide. It improved the feeding responses on some of the ones who must have felt too out in the open with just paper towel.

I had pictures of the baby setup, but evidently I deleted them. Here are some pictures of the amazon baby setup which is similar although it has multiple heat pads instead of a heat lamp. I based my chondro baby cages on the setup that Greg Maxwell talks about in his book or on his website. I think you could probably use heat pads if you wanted to as well. I've also included the pictures of my adult cages. The styrofoam is just the stuff that you get from an arts and crafts store. I use it to insulate the top and sides to prevent heat loss. The chondro tubs are also taped with black tape on the outside on three sides to make it more enclosed. I want them to feel safe. Babies also have moss or shredded cypress and a live pothos:

Adult cages, based on Greg M's plans:

If you really want to see the baby chondro setup and the amazon cage doesn't give you the idea you want, let me know and I'll go thru my CD's of photos and see if I can find the one I took.
