You tell her not to get used to that bad man over there Dave thanks so much for feeding her and feeding her again and again

rainbowsrus Feb 12, 2008 03:46 PM

But she likes me!!!!

She eats pretty much every week unless they're all getting a fast week, she's not one to turn down a meal.

I do run low on feeders from time to time and designate a fast week. I figure it's not bad for them, maybe even good to allow them to clear out their systems. And it allows me to catch up on producing feeders!

feeders quite often and give my males the week off quite regularly and my pets aren't as fed as often as my "hopeful" breeders lol but all in all I wished I lived closer to you to get some female rats cuz I am getting desperate so I just hope I can get babies out of the two I have and just keep all the ladies and pimp them back to their father and so on.......

rainbowsrus Feb 12, 2008 04:48 PM

That usually works out just fine (female baby rats raised up and bred back to father) but several generations of that and they can crap out. With a small colony, pick up an unrelated male from time to time. Even a small one to grow up is fine, actually IMO better than a full grown so you know it's young and fed right.

She's not fasting this season with all those hunks around your place is she or did she stay on the feeding schedule like clockwork? Just wondering if her body is telling her to breed or not but then again they might not have stopped taking food yet, fill me in and teach me please and no she is going this year too but just wondering

rainbowsrus Feb 12, 2008 03:51 PM

Well, she's never been much of a clockwork feeder. Definitely not enough mass for breeding IMO so not being introduced to any males this year. She's still eating about the same but may shut down in the near future as all the breeding smells start to waft through the room. So far only seen a little activity with Fred/Wilma and Fluffy/Savannah. Still way early in the season and the others are still eating on a every other week schedule.

Short story is a imported WC female (Eve) gave birth to a litter at the importers, 5.3 babies including Genevieve (pics below). I bought the whole group. Is she a hypo, I really don't know but there is some definite color thing going on. And of course there is that wicked striping!!

From these pics you can see she has darkened up a bit over time. But is still amazing!!

Well, I can't speak for others although I know this is not an original idea, but if you're going to outcross your hypo to get fresh genes, why do it with anything but the best available animals??? SELECTIVE breeding!!!! My specific plans always get first choice breeders. Once I figure out which normals are going into my morph outcrossing projects, then I decide how to pair up the remaining normals.

My female was picked to go over to Mikes because she had lots of potential for producing stunning babies and could have significant positive influence on the hypo line. One other positive point is she was a virgin. No possibility of retained sperm and not a huge first litter. This pairing (for me) was mainly to produce breeders, not animals for sale. I did end up with more than I wanted to keep and have already sold some and still have a couple left to sell.

The whole list....

Known morphs:
Hypo
Anery

Suspected morphs:
Pearls

Hopeful morphs:
Calico
Lateral Striped (Genevieve)
Dorsal striped (Ziggy and Zoe)

Phases:

see brown on the head instead of the body color, then I don't think it should be called a high anything but I don't have any high reds, oranges or yellow but I'm trying hard. A high orange should damn near have the same color on the dorsal pattern as it does on the crescent color

IMO most (if not all) of the phases come from selective line breeding for specific traits.
