Interesting point on "Ban" from PIJAC

rainbowsrus Feb 12, 2008 04:44 PM

By no means am I or any one else suggesting to relax paying attention to this proposal, after investigation, there is no actual legislation involved at this time. From PIJAC...

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is currently reviewing available biological and economic information and asking for any information from the public on constrictor snakes from the Python, Boa and Eunectes genera for possible addition of some of these species to the list of injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act. (NOTE: Even though it published in the Proposed Rules section of the Federal Register, this is NOT a rulemaking proposal - it is only a fact finding initiative.)

Of course depending on the "facts" they find, there could be legislation proposed.

Furthermore, PIJAC actually recommends holding off replying to their request until efforts already underway to gather data are made available to use in your replies. Again, from PIJAC...

Recommended Action.
We ask that you withhold submitting your comments until close to the April 30 deadline in order
to allow PIJAC time to provide you with guidance and information that will help you prepare
effective comments. PIJAC is currently engaging in meetings with the FWS and gathering
information to assist you on this issue. Again, please note, that this is not a proposed rulemaking
notice – it is only a notice to gather information, especially biological, on these particular snakes.

Dave,

Thanks for posting this, but like everything else about this
issue, it makes no sense, at least not to me. There is no reason any federal tax money should be used to perform "fact finding" on a non-issue, or at best an issue confined to south Florida. That alone is reason to send feedback asap, imo, but the way they seem to be going about the "fact finding" seems suspicious. So why wait?? We can always send more letters in a couple months as well.

Thanks,
Ed

The main reason to wait is to avoid tipping our hand to our adversaries in HSUS and PETA, who will be supporting any suggestion for further regulation of ANY exotic reptiles. Since all responses are in the public domain, sending letters early will give these groups ample time to tailor their own responses to counter our points.

We should follow PIJAC's lead on this one.
